S.I.P #10 Staged Ponies - canvas 1065

Slow day here, thought I would try one of the Water Pony references from S.I.P #10 we'll use this Saturday.

My canvas is a small 12x16.......postage stamp kinda size. After cropping and sizing the reference in Photoshop to match up with my canvas, I was ready to push paint. The stages below might be a useful guide converting a static photo into movement and light on canvas with abstract shapes.

SATURDAY'S TEAM INSPIRATION

SATURDAY'S PHOTO REFERENCE

This will be a fun project, we will pick a pony reference that speaks to us and enjoy the ride. While the subject is the same, we'll each use different references. Horses are easy if you get the basic shape established at the front end. Paint what you see, be observant and just do it! It's only paint and canvas not the big bad wolf. Sling paint, enjoy the game of painting intuitively. This is not about making a masterpiece - if it doesn't work, wipe it off and ride it again - always with energy!

For those who can't make the class or live in distant lands, download the references and try this at home. Email me at Chuck@Larivey.com with your results - I would love to see them:=)

Dale Chihuly gave a great gift to the world and Virginia when he created his red reeds for the VMFA Koi pond. The Chiluly Red Reeds is a local Richmond favorite but will also have broad based appeal to painters world wide. This is a subject that will work in any painting style, small or "LARGE" as the examples above show.

For those who can't make the class or live in distant lands, download the references and try this at home. Email me at Chuck@Larivey.com with your results - I would love to see them:=)

Saturday recap #8 - Ballet

Some of our swimmers never painted a figure before but that didn't stop them from diving into the deep end. If they do, and they come up smiling they have my attention because painting requires a fearless attitude to succeed.

I'm always more interested in capturing the essence of any subject I paint because if I do, the eye will make sense of the rest. Capturing a shape or a line requires developed observational skills. The line requires a bit more confidence, understanding what that line will do in conjunction with rhythm of the design and overall composition. Very much like writing, we automatically go into the next move. Painting requires the same. When we write, we do it in a deliberate intuitive way. Painting requires the same. Depending on ones skills it can produce a dance of connected moves related to an overall passage of colour and punctuation.......delightful rich colour to delicate producing light and shadow. These moves can be bold and expressive in dramatic scale as perhaps in Sargent or expressed delicately as in a Renoir. Our colour sense is personal albeit subtle it varies from person to person (as it should)

Live Demo - FAST & FURIOUS

Yesterday at Crossroads was serious fun. Jenni, owner of Crossroads graciously sat for me while I demoed my first, live three quarter Portrait. LOL...to keep it simple my linen canvas was small at 48x44 and I placed a time limit of 4 or 5 hours. Yikes! What was I thinking? However, Jenni was perfect because she continually engaged our audience in perpetual motion at its best! Which is exactly how I envisioned it to be.:=)

FAST & FURIOUS

I'm pretty happy with the results and can't wait to do another one.....yep!
I love doing FAST & FURIOUS PAINTING!

OUR INSPIRATION

PHOTO REFERENCES

I included this wonderful photo (above) because of its similarity to Degas's light and sensual quality of our inspiration piece.

MAIN REFERENCE

Great study pieces!

NOT MUCH DOUBT DEGAS OWNS THIS SUBJECT. It was his compositions that always attracted me to his work. I'm looking forward to this Saturday's session to see what the team does with this one.

"Swimming in Paint" is always about following the light and painting shapes. In this case "luminous" shapes. Last weeks "Nine Squares Project" should help our team this week focus on the all important subtle details in our main reference. Could be fun if they find a different crop to represent another point of view and mood too.

PROJECT INFORMATION

I would prefer brown bag to the disruption of leaving, paying and returning from outside lunch sources. This will allow more time at the lunch table to chat and study our progress.
