I'm doing one of those sunsets that is better left to photographers, you know the kind we do when we first start painting - in my day it had a few palms at waters edge.
I enjoy painting certain iconic subjects like House of Parliament, lily pads or pink flamingos……the challenges are greater…in the case of Pink flamingos we think of garish lawn ornaments, not something for a wall, much less a best wall; and of course, Monet owns the lily pads but I found a way around it by adding Koi to the mix. Wonderful subject on its own…..the lily pads are a logical background material. Perhaps my favorite of his (Monet) is the House of Parliament series. We both recognized it’s simply a best supporting actor for a great atmospheric sun painting – a bit of romance if you will. These are subjects that allow great artistic license if you take the time to explore the possibilities…
I enjoyed doing what turned out to be a very efficient suggestive fun 2-day painting, it has a fresh wet-in-wet looseness about it which I found is one of the keys to painting visual dimension. Some refer to it as a 3-d effect.
Studio construction is over; only waiting for my new Hughes easel to be shipped. We have a temporary cover over floor pocket.
Got lucky and slipped another painting over the line this week
Next week will be all about en plein air Richmond. I'll be joining Plein Air Artists from all over the United States for an amazing week creating paintings in support of the Richmond Symphony hosted by the Brazier Gallery
