PHOTO REFERENCES

References divided into (9) equal squares

This Saturday is about a simple idea of breaking a large painting down into small painting sessions. Originally a problem solving thing for an artist friend who had little time to paint. Using the theory that if you could spend an hour painting a small 8x10 - why not apply that time to a larger canvas over a number of sessions and at the end have a solid painting as opposed to a pile of small ones with little value for time spent other than practice.

The original idea was called NINE SQUARE and broke down a very complicated subject (below) into nine equal sections (It requires a good reference to start with),

However, this time it's about "Swimming in Paint", keeping focus, developing colour matching and of course painting shapes of light and shadow with lots of paint.

Lessons learned
  • Conquer and divide worked - nine equal grids that matched photo reference
  • Easy focus - used an organized random approach so the adjacent square didn't influence me - a bit like a puzzle.
  • Maintained colour control - forced to colour match into the next square
  • Light and shadow - easier to maintain because of painting colour shapes
Completed each square before moving to the next - doing as little square crossing as possible.

 669 Koi & Lily 30x30 oil on linen (6/13/12)

PROJECT INFORMATION

I would prefer brown bag to the disruption of leaving, paying and returning from outside lunch sources. This will allow more time at the lunch table to chat and study our progress.

The canvas surface will be 30x30. An ample supply of smooth 30x30 stretched oil primed linen canvas will always be available at $25. each.....or bring your own.

There will also be a supply of Royal soft grip brushes (SG4500 Series) available at $2.50 each.

I do encourage using a glass palette - old picture frame glass works with a white sheet of paper and a cardboard backing or foam core with blue taped edges to hold it all together.

Please try to have (1) Flexible palette knife. Preferably similar to the two on the left.
