Saturday recap #8 - Ballet

Some of our swimmers never painted a figure before but that didn't stop them from diving into the deep end. If they do, and they come up smiling they have my attention because painting requires a fearless attitude to succeed.

I'm always more interested in capturing the essence of any subject I paint because if I do, the eye will make sense of the rest. Capturing a shape or a line requires developed observational skills. The line requires a bit more confidence, understanding what that line will do in conjunction with rhythm of the design and overall composition. Very much like writing, we automatically go into the next move. Painting requires the same. When we write, we do it in a deliberate intuitive way. Painting requires the same. Depending on ones skills it can produce a dance of connected moves related to an overall passage of colour and punctuation.......delightful rich colour to delicate producing light and shadow. These moves can be bold and expressive in dramatic scale as perhaps in Sargent or expressed delicately as in a Renoir. Our colour sense is personal albeit subtle it varies from person to person (as it should)
