The child below is very much his mother's likeness, same mouth, eye shape and nose. Looking at him an easy paint job! Think again! The first attempt ended in a wipe-out. When I started to paint it took about a year to establish my materials. Until now never deviated. Experimenting is a sticky business.
Today back to my norm. Curious to see what happens.
Side-by-side easy to see the problem areas but not going to modify it. I captured the hair and more important his eye gaze.

SECOND TRY (3-hour study)
At this stage it looks like him. He had freckles at this age. We lived in Coronado next to the beach, so a great tan came with the territory. Painting the background made him thinner. Removed too much of the cast shadows back painting.
Difficult to shake off U-Tube influence. Bits here and there are absorbed with little notice. Binging on the other hand can shake things up.... muddles the mind. More front-end drawing than I care to do. Certain colours, black, raw/burnt umber and venetian red were still on my palette, still orphans with no set place. If staying need own room room.
More practice!
